Where the sutures have not come together, the baby&#8217;s head continues to grow. When this happens, the skull will be abnormally shaped, even though the brain inside has reached its normal size.<\/p><p>But, sometimes there is more than one suture that closes prematurely. In these cases, the brain may not have enough space to reach its normal size. This can cause a buildup of pressure inside the skull, which can cause problems such as blindness, seizures, or brain damage.<\/p><p>There are basically <strong>4 types of craniosynostosis<\/strong> , based on the suture that closes prematurely: <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/conditions-and-treatments\/conditions-we-treat\/sagittal-craniosynostosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n  <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\n    <strong>Sagittal synostosis<\/strong>\n  <\/span>\n<\/a>affecting the sagittal suture extending from the fontanel to the nape of the neck (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiocefalia.com\/en\/scaphocephaly\/\">\n  <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\n    <strong>scaphocephaly<\/strong>\n  <\/span>\n<\/a>).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrens.com\/specialties-services\/conditions\/unilateral-coronal-synostosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n  <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\n    <strong>Coronal synostosis<\/strong>\n  <\/span>\n<\/a>caused by the closure of one (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiocefalia.com\/en\/plagiocephaly-treatment\/\">\n  <strong>\n    <span style=\"color: #993300;\">anterior plagiocephaly<\/span>\n  <\/strong>\n<\/a>) or both coronal sutures (<strong>\n  <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\n    <a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiocefalia.com\/en\/brachycephaly\/\">brachycephaly<\/a>\n  <\/span>\n<\/strong>), which run from the ears to the sagittal suture.<\/li><li><b>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/conditions-and-treatments\/conditions-we-treat\/lambdoid-craniosynostosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n    <span style=\"color: #993300;\">Lambdoid synostosis<\/span>\n  <\/a>\n<\/b>which extends along the back of the head (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plagiocefalia.com\/en\/plagiocephaly-treatment\/\">\n  <span style=\"color: #993300;\">\n    <strong>posterior plagiocephaly<\/strong>\n  <\/span>\n<\/a>). Only in case of doubt (especially for the closed lambdoid suture) do we resort to skull X-rays.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-20dfb67\" data-id=\"20dfb67\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4bfcd23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4bfcd23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To plan the surgical intervention, the practice of a three-dimensional helical scan (3D CT; 3D CT-scan) is useful. We reserve the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMR or MRI) for brain mass studies.<\/p><p>Before surgery we propose an ophthalmological review, neurological maturation test, dysmorphological pediatric study. Only in extreme cases is intracranial pressure (ICP) taken.<\/p><p>Depending on each case, a genetic study is requested, especially in complex or syndromic craniosynostosis (Crouzon, Apert, Saethre-Chotzen, etc).<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #014f99;\">Treatment for craniosynostosis<\/span><\/h3><p>For Oxycephaly, Trigonocephaly and certain types of scaphocephaly<\/p><p>The solution, if it does not occur spontaneously, requires surgery to avoid the problems that the brain malformation can cause in the normal development of the baby&#8217;s brain,
