Our professional experience in treating craniofacial anomalies in infants at the Centro Médico Craneofacial (CMC) goes back to 1974.
Having specialised in pediatrics and surgery in prestigious pediatric hospitals in Spain, CMC professionals have taught, directed pediatric operating theatres and have participated as distinguished speakers in numerous national and international congresses.
Since 1974 surgery has made great advances. Craniofacial surgery has made an appearence, as have tisular expansion, endoscopic cranial surgery, osseous distraction and orthopedic cranial treatment with dynamic bands.
As a result of a continued interest in the treatment of positional plagiocephaly by cranial band (1998) all members of the Centro Médico Craneofacial team have received specific training at the Cranial Technologies Inc. centre (CTI) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA (1999), and have attended annual training sessions directed by CTI.
In 1999 the Barcelona medical centre became the first in Europe to use the DOC band™ orthopedic technique with the Madrid centre opening in 2003.
Between 1988 and 2006 Cranial Technologies Inc. has treated more than 35.000 cases of craniofacial deformities with DOC band™. CTI has 12 clinics of its own and there are a total of 9 licensed centres including the two in Spain.
How has the Spanish Centro Médico Craneofacial (1998-2006) helped to give greater exposure to plagiocephaly diagnosis and treatment?:
- setting up the web site URL http://www.plagiocefalia.com (1999).
- creation of the parents' forum Plagiocefalia in Spanish Yahoo (octubre 2003) which now boasts more than 450 members and more than 3.300 messages sent: http://es.groups.yahoo.com/group/Plagiocefalia/
- Prize for the best medical speech at the VII Transmed Pediatrics and Obstetrics Congress, held in Sevilla, April 1999 on the theme Correction of positional deformities of the cranium and face of newborn infants with orthopedic treatment.
- approval by the Spanish Pediatric Asociation (AEP) and the Spanish Pediatric Surgery Society in authorising their link to our web site.
- collecting signatures from parents of affected infants to put pressure on Governmental institutions.
- aiding in the creation of the Children with Plagiocephaly Parents Association (2006).
- helping the association to edit ad publish informative posters and brochures to be sent to all Spanish pediatric hospitals and clinics.
