About us

From 1988 to present, Cranial Technologies Inc. (USA) has treated more than 100.000 cases of craniofacial deformities with DOC Band®, has 22 centers in the United States and Europe.

Our professional experience in treating craniofacial anomalies in infants at the European Craneofacial Medical Centre goes back to 1974.

Having specialised in pediatrics and surgery in prestigious pediatric hospitals in Spain, CMC professionals have taught, directed pediatric operating theatres and have participated as distinguished speakers in numerous national and international congresses.

Since 1974 surgery has made great advances. Craniofacial surgery has made an appearence, as have tisular expansion, endoscopic cranial surgery, osseous distraction and orthopedic cranial treatment with dynamic bands.

As a result of a continued interest in the treatment of positional plagiocephaly by cranial band (1998) all members of out team have received specific training at the Cranial Technologies Inc. centre (CTI) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA (1999), and have attended annual training sessions directed by CTI.

Currently our professionals have medical consultation in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal and surgery in patients with malformations are performed in the pediatric center of the University Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell (Barcelona).

Experience

Craniofacial deformities have always existed though apparently nowadays these are both more frequent and more serious. Basically there are three typologies: plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and scaphocephaly, although since plagiocephaly is the most widely-known the term is used loosely to describe all three types.

The first report of the treatment of plagiocephaly by cranial orthoses was published by Sterling K. Clarren (1979), using passive bands. Jeanne Pomatto-Hertz (1986), founder of the American company Cranial Technologies Inc., CTI, (1988), invented and patented the dynamic cranial orthoses called the DOC band®, and established a modern base for the diagnosis and treatment of plagiocephaly, publishing much of her work in the years 1994 and 1998.

As a result of our interest in her work (1998) and our posterior training and integration within the global network set up by Cranial Technologies Inc., since 1999 we have opened two clinics in Spain dedicated to the treatment of plagiocephaly according to their programmed protocols. That same year saw the start of our web site – plagiocefalia.com – with the ambition to cover this medical field in a language other than English. As a result, we have been able to establish both important clinical work studies and social communication: parents’ area and forum, a Parents’ Association which collects signatures and represents patients.

Not until 2003 did an American Academy of Pediatrics scientific committee presided by the prestigious cosmetic and neurosurgeon John A. Persing publish an article which finally recommended the use of cranial remoulding bands officially.

We have participated in numerous pediatric congresses to divulge the results of our experience with the DOC band®, as well as publishing articles directed at parents and are presently campaigning to get the Health Services and academic organisations more actively involved.

Today, we feel it is time to renew our web site so as to include more of the experience accumulated after the treatment of hundreds of patients with the DOC band®. Unlike the earlier version, the information given here is intended to be less aimed at promoting the technique and more direct, whilst keeping our emphasis on a scientific and informative base.

Our idea is to make it easier for parents to access unbiased information so as to be able to roughly diagnose their baby’s head shape, by reading the information given and comparing the photographs of a variety of cases.

You will learn to identify what can be considered normal and that which is not. How simple posture changes can avoid plagiocephaly and assuming that the diagnosis indicates that it is too late to expect the condition to improve by itself, how orthopedic treatment can help to remedy the deformity.

It is our aim to:

  • help parents by giving scientific information.
  • involve everyone in preventing plagiocephaly appearing.
  • get treatment started at the earliest possible age and in the best possible way.
  • avoid long-term physical and neurological side-effects.
  • reach out to society in general and pediatricians to promote early diagnosis and treatment of plagiocephaly and craniosynostosis.
  • offer early surgical treatment according to the latest techniques for craniosynostosis and craniofacial syndromes.
